Henry's Hunan, Sansome Street
Today, one of my favorites, Henry's Hunan Restaurant. Henry Chung opened his restaurant in 1974 and not long afterwards The New Yorker magazine named it "the best Chinese restaurant in the world." OK, lets not go nuts, but the place is fantastic, especially for fans of hot and spicy Hunan cuisine. The restaurant is now located in this warehouse near Levi Plaza and serves its dumplings in hot chili oil and fiery Harvest Pork to scores of happy, masochistic diners every day. One testament to the restaurant's popularity are the foil wrappers wedged into every telephone pole within a two block radius. The wrappers have been placed there by by customers hoping to cool down that post-meal burn with one of Henry's after-dinner mints.
