Juggling Swimmer, China Beach
Originally known as Phelan Beach, China Beach is one of the few places in San Francisco where swimming is relatively safe. While the water is still very cold, there are fewer riptides here and hearty swimmers can enjoy sweeping views of the Golden Gate Bridge and the entrance to the bay. Named after the Chinese fishing camp located here in the 1800s, the beach was also a popular spot for smuggling. Not only was it used to bring in Chinese workers when immigration from China was restricted, it was also the westernmost location of the Underground Railroad during the Civil War.
