Vigil, San Quentin Prison
[UPDATED] The State of California executed Stanley Tookie Williams on Tuesday December 13, 2005. Protesters against the execution are shown here holding vigil on the previous Saturday. San Quentin is California's oldest prison built in 1854 and currently has the only death chamber in the state. Between 1893 and 1936, 215 inmates were hanged at San Quentin. Today execution is by the gas chamber or lethal injection.
