The Banker's Heart, Downtown
In 1904 Italian-born, A. P. Gianinni founded the Bank of America in an old saloon with the bartender as the assistant teller. After the great earthquake and fire of 1906 Giannini saved the bank's $2 million in deposits by hiding them under a wagonload of vegetables. Today the Bank of America is one of the largest banks in the country, its downtown headquarters is the second tallest building the San Francisco and was used in the movie, 'The Towering Inferno'. In its plaza the 200-ton granite sculpture, 'Transcendence' is better known locally as 'The Banker's Heart' because of its hard, cold, black form.
