On June 3rd, 1888 columnist Ernest Thayer, using the pen name Phin, had his 112-line Poem 'Casey at the Bat' published in the San Francisco Examiner. The paper's publisher, William Randolph Hearst had been a college classmate of Thayer at Harvard. The term, 'Sandlot Baseball' also orginated in San Francisco due to a group of gold rush miners who played the new game on a sandy area that is now the Civic Center. The area became so identified with the game that people started referring to ballplayers as 'Sandlotters' and their new game as 'Sandlot Ball'.
