Friday Night Falling, North Beach
The North Beach neighborhood got its name from a now landfilled beach that stretched from Russian Hill, here in the foreground to Telegraph Hill, in the background. In the mid 1800s the area was mostly industrial and boasted over ten breweries. During the 1880s the area saw a huge influx of Italian fishermen from the gulf of Genova and the Ligurian sea. During the great fire following the 1906 earthquake North Beach residents protected their houses by breaking open barrels of wine and draping their homes in wine-soaked blankets. Still heavily Italian-American today, this neighborhood is known for its ristorantes, caffes and old world delicatessens. It is also the location of many of the liveliest nightclubs and bars in San Francisco.
