The Concealing Fog, Golden Gate
For hundred of years the fog at the mouth of the Golden Gate kept it hidden from passing ships, including Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo in 1542 and Sir Francis Drake who sailed by in 1579. The bay was eventually uncovered in 1769 when Spanish explorer, Gaspar de Portola's expedition, travelling overland, stumbled onto the Golden Gate while searching for Monterey's bay. The Golden Gate got its name in 1848 from John Fremont who named it after the Constantinople harbor, the Golden Horn.
