San Francisco Art Institute, Russian Hill
Imagine a recently-graduated high school student coming to San Francisco for the first time to enter the San Francisco Art Institute. Existing in 1871 and the oldest art school west of the Mississippi, the SFAI as been a key player in the development of young contemporary artists in America. It's faculty and instructors has included Man Ray, Mark Rothko, Richard Diebenkorn, and Ad Reinhardt. Its alumni include Eadweard Muybridge, Ansel Adam, Marcel Duchamp, Frank Lloyd Wright, Jerry Garcia, Annie Leibovitz, Angela Davis, Christopher Coppola, along with many, many others. The Institute features a monastic courtyard and tower, as well as two-story mural by Diego Rivera. Our young graduate should find plenty of inspiration within its walls.
