The Holy Cow Bar, Folsom Street
San Francisco has always been a good drinking city. From the Gold Rush days when thousands of miners wanted to celebrate their new-found gold dust in the infamous Barbary Coast bars to World War II when the city served as the embarkation point for those soldiers and sailors going off to fight in the Pacific. In fact in 1890 the city granted 3,117 liquor licenses, one for every 96 residents. That year alone $9,000,000 worth of alcohol was drunk in those licensed bars. That number doesn't include those drinks from the more than 2,000 unlicensed speakeasies that also existed. Cheers, everyone!
