Greenwich Street Stairs, Telegraph Hill
Required reading for anyone who moves to San Francisco is Armistead Maupin's, 'Tales of the City' series. The story of a young midwesterner, Mary Ann Singleton who comes to visit in the city and after five days calls back home to say she's moving here. The series started out as a daily serial in the San Francisco Chronicle and was later adapted to television by BBC. Despite having the patina of a book written in 1978, it provides humorous glimpses into life in San Francisco. Much of the story takes place in an apartment house at the fictitious 28 Barbary Lane. Barbary Lane was based on addresses like those on Telegraph Hill and Russian Hill where a few hundred stairs lead up to wooded, secluded homes.
