Clock Tower, Ghirardelli Square
One big tourist draw in San Francisco is Ghirardelli Square on the Waterfront near Fisherman's Wharf. Its history as a Civil War era woolen mill and chocolate factory has had less impact than its more recent history. In 1967 after the chocolate making moved across the bay to San Leandro, Ghirardelli Square reinvented itself, giving birth to new restaurants and boutiques. This type of warehouse reuse set the standard across the country from Fanueil Hall in Boston to New York City's South Street Seaport. Chances are if you live in a U.S. city of any size there is a 'historic warehouse district' that has been transformed into a new shopping and restaurant area. You have Ghirardelli Square to thank for that.
