Fresh Crabs, Fisherman's Wharf
At one time over 450 fishing boats brought thousands of pounds of crabs into what was then called "Italy Harbor". On the dock, wives and children would wait for the crab boats early morning return to help unload the catch. Baseball's Hall of Famer Joe DiMaggio and former San Francisco Mayor Joe Alioto were both sons of crab fisherman from Fisherman's Wharf. This heritage is celebrated with the San Francisco Crab Festival held every February which includes the Blessing of the Fishing Fleet.
