Whaling Ship Monument, Pier 40
From 1881 until 1906 the whaling capital of the world was San Francisco. However many who shipped out were 'Shanghai' victims, men who would wake up after a drunk or after being drugged only to find themselves part of a crew bound for the Arctic Ocean to hunt bowhead whale. The reason for such tactics was the amount money to be made in whale and whalebone. In 1892 the Mary D.Hume docked at San Francisco with a cargo of whale oil and baleen valued at an astounding $400,000; it remains the most valuable U.S. whaling cargo ever.
