Fireboat Guardian, Waterfront
The fires after the 1906 earthquake caused most of the destruction to San Francisco so when the 1989 earthquake broke gas mains and caused multiple fires in the Marina district many feared the worst. The Fireboat Phoenix responded. Working with fireman and volunteers, some dressed in business suits, others in shorts and sneakers, the boat provided 10 lines of water for over 15 hours, eventually saving the Marina. The Fireboat Guardian, shown above, was a gift to San Francisco from two anonymous donors from the Marina district who gave $300,000 towards the purchase of the vessel. A $50,000 donation from Shinnyo-En, a Buddhist organization in the Marina paid for outfitting and bringing the ship to San Francisco.
