Vaillancourt Fountain, Justin Herman Plaza
On the eastern waterfront of San Francisco's Embarcadero sits the Vaillancourt Fountain. Built in 1971, the controversial 100 concrete tubes and boxes has been the subject of many an art discussion. In 1987 U2 performed an unannounced concert here and Bono spray-painted the fountain (this event can be seen in their rockumentary film, 'Rattle and Hum'). In retaliation fountain designer Armand Vaillancourt flew from his home in Canada to the U2 concert at the Oakland Coliseum and spray-painted their stage.
