Street Art, The Haight
Haight-Ashbury, 'the Haight' to locals, was once a middle-class neighborhood. but in the late '60s it was transformed into ground zero for the hippie counterculture. Janis Joplin and her lover Country Joe McDonald lived just down the street from the Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead and near Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane. Graham Nash stayed in the same house that Jack London and Ambrose Bierce had once lived in. But as Flower Power and the Summer of Love faded, the area turned into a distressed area for runaways and drug addicts. Recently however, the Haight has seen the beginnings of urban gentification, much to the dismay of some residents.
