Bandshell in the Fog, Golden Gate Park
The Golden Gate Park Band has been playing free public concerts on Sundays in Golden Gate Park continuously since September of 1882. Originally the band had 12 members and performed in a wooden bandstand like the one above. By 1900 the concerts were so popular that the large stone Temple of Music was built to accommodate the huge crowds. That giant stone stage still stands outside the de Young Museum.

Today the public concert season begins in late April and continue to the season finale in October. The band plays a great variety of music including classic band favorites, opera, marches, Broadway show tunes, orchestral transcriptions, novelty tunes, folk music, and big band swing. The free public concerts begin at 1:00 in the afternoon on Sundays.

Oh jeeezzzz....

Takes me back 40 years...

I took a date to the band concert in the park...
I enjoyed it but it bored her to death...
She never wanted to go out with me again...

sigh...

And by the way, your photography recently (not to exclude the past) has been absolutely great... Loved that shot in the Mission looking in the door...

My father used to drag me to the bandshell to listen to the big bands that played there periodically. I loathed it, but guess what? I obviously internalized some of it because whenever I hear big band music now, I think it sounds kinda cool.
