In the Giant's Shadow, San Mateo County
San Mateo County is kind of like the Jan Brady of California counties, with San Francisco County to its north, Alameda County (Oakland, Berkeley) to its east, and Santa Clara County (San Jose, Palo Alto) to its south, San Mateo is often overlooked. However San Mateo can boast of beautiful scenery and rich natural assets including redwood forests, estuarine shoreline, and an oak savannah. While it has more than 15 times the square miles of San Francisco County, San Mateo has a smaller population.

The county is also home to the affluent cities of Atherton and Hillsborough known for their sprawling, opulent private estates. For many San Mateo County is the gateway to the Bay Area because the SFO International Airport is located there. This photo of iron giant sculpture was taken at the San Mateo Fairgrounds during this year's Maker Faire in May.
