A Home in the Park, The Presidio
When the military left the Presidio in 1994 the plan was to turn the park into a greenbelt and make it fiscally-sustainable in 20 years. In 2005 that goal was reached, eight years early. Part of the Presidio's revenue comes from the many homes for lease on the former Army base. There are 21 neighborhoods here available for lease, ranging from one bedroom, apartment-style barracks up to seven bedroom Mission Revival and Colonial Revival officer's homes. Homes such as these on Kobbe Terrace have rents that can start as high at $20,000 a month. While there usually is affordable housing available, the more expensive properties have long waiting lists. For many, the chance to live in a National Historic Landmark within walking distance of the Golden Gate Bridge and panoramic ocean views, the price is worth it.
