The End of the Lincoln Highway
All good things must come to an end and the Lincoln Highway, the nation's first transcontinental highway, fittingly comes to an end in San Francisco's Lincoln Park. The coast-to-coast road started in 1913 originates in New York City's Times Square and travels 3,400 miles to terminate at this spot. The famed highway rolls through 14 states, 128 counties, and over 500 cities, towns and villages. Built before the age of today's interstates, the road was hard for many to even conceive of and became known as 'The Main Street Across America.' According to a 1916 Lincoln Highway Road Guide a trip along the Lincoln Highway might take as long as 30 days and the guide recommended bringing chains, a shovel, axe, jacks, tire casings and inner tubes, and tools. It also warned, "Don't wear new shoes."
