Slot Cars, Hyde Street
Well tomorrow today is election day and this is my lame attempt to suggest something about this being our chance to get America back on track.

Speaking of tracks, in the late 1800s there were ten different cable car companies in San Francisco, operating nearly 600 cars. All those tracks throughout the city offered rollerskating youngsters of the day a dangerous temptation. Some kids would link bent wire through the slots in the ground and latch onto the cable. The young daredevils would then let the underground cable tow them up to the top the city's hills, release the wire, and speed down the hills, dodging in and out of traffic.

So go out and vote tomorrow today (Yes on Obama, No on Prop 8) and don't forget if you're a Republican you have until November 15th to get your ballot in.

This is the best slot car layout I've ever seen. Those gleaming tracks!

As a mother, I shudder at the thought of those daredevils.

Republicans get to vote?! I think you have that mixed up.

Great photo of Hyde Street. I loved driving up that hill in my little Honda Civic. Especially in the rain.

Amen on Yes on Obama and No on Prop 8!

Really enjoy your blog. Just recently learned about it and went through every entry yesterday. Looking forward to new places that you discover. I wander the Bay Area with my camera quite a bit as well and have two photosets that I thought you might find of interst:

The Micro Neighborhoods of the San Francisco Bay Area: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thomashawk/collections/72157600034264254/

and

Bay Area Photographic Destiniations: http://www.flickr.com/photos/thomashawk/collections/72157600108572240/

Thanks for putting such a valuable resource up on the web. Your historical perspective on so many of these great spots is inspiring.

Thanks for the comments everyone.

Dutchbaby:
I wasn't so much recycling as too busy to post on Election Day. Thanks for the benefit of the doubt though.

Thomas Hawk:
You've got some great photo sites, I encourage everyone to check them out.

Such a great photo. I'm just so sad about Prop 8, though...

Where do you find these stories?!!

Love the shot, absolutely love the story of the our great grandparents barreling down the hills of San Francisco on their skates!

Sorry to hear Prop R didn't pass. Personally, I thought that one was well worth the money.

As to Prop. 8, don't even get me started (sigh).
