Maritime Museum, Aquatic Park
Pictured above is the ship-shaped, art deco Maritime Museum that is currently undergoing a $10 million renovation to become, well ship-shape. Built in 1939 as a WPA project, it was originally a bathhouse for swimmers. But due to a lack of interest in braving the frigid waters the building became a museum in 1951. The museum closed two years ago for the restoration and when it opens early next year it will be displaying some exhibits and art work that have not been seen in 50 years. The museum is just part of the $45 million renovation of the city's beautiful Aquatic Park.

It's a great place for events, allows wandering away from the crowd. I've been to a wedding reception and a company Christmas party.

Interesting that it couldn't sustain as a bath house, the Dolphin Club and South End have been there since long before 1939.

Thanks for letting us know; you will be missed. I guess this is a good time to catch up on your archives.

Have a great week!

P.S. I really like how your photo shows the sun glimmering on the building.

I'm always amazed at how many people actually do swim out there, though... Not my cup of tea...
I've never been inside the Maritime Museum, so it should make an interesting side-trip when they re-open it...
