Green Apple Books, Clement Street
It is hard to explain to a visitor the reverence in which Green Apple is held. With its rickety wooden floors, staircases and the seemingly endless rooms stuffed, but not overstuffed, with new and old books, it may provide the quintessential San Francisco experience. The shop is staffed by knowledgeable, laid-back, and friendly employees who know exactly where that arcane tome you want is located. Green Apple is the perfect place to go after dinner at Burma SuperStar down the street or to kill a few hours on a foggy Sunday afternoon.

Founded in 1967 by Richard Savoy, Green Apple houses over a quarter million titles. The shop is regularly voted 'Best Used Bookstore' and 'Best Independent Bookstore' in the Bay Area (quite a distinction). In a day of Borders, Barnes & Noble, and Amazon.com, our beloved Green Apple is still going strong. Green Apple has also expanded to an annex a few doors down that features music and videos.

A local secret indeed. I'm glad you are featuring Green Apple. With the departure of other fabulous independent book stores, like Cody's Books of Berkeley, we need to patronize as many of the remaining greats as we can. Over the years, Green Apple has consistently been very good to local publishers and authors. Thank you once again for your part in protecting the Bay Area's treasures.

Green Apple is THE BOMB and the Annex is super fun, too. After you load up on books you can get a crepe at Genji if Burma Superstar is too crowded...

I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE(!) Green Apple!! I grew up in the Richmond and it is a vital part of the neighborhood, even if the neighbors have changed a bit recently.

I hope people keep Green Apple in business for many, many years to come!!
