Walking Up Telegraph Hill
This week San Francisco was named 'The Most Walkable City in America' by Walk Score based on analysis of 2,508 neighborhoods in the 40 most populous U.S. cities. This distinction comes because of the work of groups like Walk San Francisco, an pedestrian advocacy organization which "promotes walking as a safe and sustainable form of transportation that increases our city’s livability, enhances public life, and improves public and environmental health" and the Mayor's Sunday Street's Program, a pilot program that is bringing physical activity space to San Francisco neighborhoods during this summer and fall.

As part of the Sunday Street's Program the city has plans to shut down six miles of traffic along the waterfront Embarcadero during two Sundays this summer (August 31st and September 14th). The idea is for locals to partake of physical activity in a wide, open space not usually available to pedestrians. The event will include a roller skating rink, bicycle training, hula-hooping, as well as dance and yoga classes, and even a mass re-enactment of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' dance video at China Basin Park. The hope is to get more people out of their cars and excited about exercise.

Thank you for this beautiful website. I was born and raised in Berkeley, but I have been following the site for the past 6 months or so from college in San Diego, and now I'm taking a semester abroad in Australia. It's so nice to be able to come visit my favorite city whenever I want and learn a little bit more about it everyday. Thank you for your work!
