49 Mile Scenic Drive, Fisherman's Wharf
The famous 49 Mile Scenic Drive in San Francisco was dedicated on September 14, 1938 by flyer Douglas 'Wrong Way' Corrigan. The Drive was the inspiration of the Downtown Association to highlight San Francisco's beauty and potential for commerce. The actual route has been changed a couple times over the years and today it begins and ends at City Hall. The Drive will take you past many of the city's most historic buildings, sites, vistas, and neighborhoods, and will take you about four hours if you don't stop along the route. Since 1955 the path of the 49 Mile Scenic Drive has been marked by the iconic blue and white seagull signs designed by local artist Rex May.

Some day I'm going to try to follow the route from start to end... It looks like it would have to be a real zig-zag of a course all of those places are on the route...
GREAT shot of the gull. Your colors are great.

And by the way -- congratulations -- be sure to stop by AphotoAday (Friday edition) and pick up your well deserved award.

Congratulations on the Award. It is well deserved. You and "a photo a day" are two of my favorite stop on the west coast. Always great photography and commentary.

I forgot to ask, How on earth did you get the gull to pose like the sign?

One of those shots that will never occur again.

Have a great week,

Thanks, Tango, APAD, and Travelers.

I've been wanting to feature the 49 Mile Scenic Drive for a while but hadn't found just the right photo to reflect the scope of the drive.

So when I spotted this gull in front of a blue background a light bulb went off. For me sometimes the hardest part is finding a photo that reflects the story I want to tell.
