Fair Warning, Ocean Beach
Ocean Beach is great place to spend sunny days in San Francisco. Surfers, sunbathers, picnickers, and beachcombers all enjoy the seven miles of sand and waves. But Ocean Beach can be a dangerous places as well, the strong tides and unexpected waves have swept up and drowned people along the city's western shore. Beach-goers are not the only ones that Ocean Beach has claimed, between 1850 and 1936 no less than 25 ships were wrecked, and 66 lives were lost on Ocean Beach. Occasionally the waves will disturb the sands of Ocean Beach enough to reveal some timbers of a long lost wreck. Last year part of the skeleton of the William Frederick (1887, two sailors lost) emerged from the sands before being buried again.
