Lion Dancer, Stockton Street
Thursday marked the beginning of the fifteen-day celebration for the Chinese New Year. Along with the festivals and banquets marking the occasion, store owners hire lion dancers to whisk away demons and bring prosperity for the upcoming Year of the Rat. Here a lion dancer, accompanied by drums, gongs, incense and firecrackers prances, bows, and flaps his jaws in front of shop to exorcise any evil spirits. The lion dancer will then enter the shop to complete the ritual and the storeowner will present lion dancer troupe with money in a red envelope for the service. Most lion dance troupes are martial arts schools or civic organizations and use the money to help support themselves.

Great shot of the Lion Dancer! I'm really enjoying your website -- I still have a lot more to get to -- there is so much to see and read about. Highly educational and highly beautiful... You really get to some very interesting corners of the City... Nice work!
