Fort Mason Center, Northern Waterfront
Dating back to the early 1800s Fort Mason, on San Francisco's waterfront, was an old military base for both Spanish and American soldiers. Today its historic buildings, warehouses, and piers have been transformed into workspaces, theaters, art galleries, restaurants, ethnic museums, and event pavilions for over three dozen resident nonprofit organizations. Along with the Nation Park Service headquarters, Fort Mason is home to such organizations as Oceanic Society Expeditions, San Francisco African American Historical and Cultural Society, Magic Theater, California Lawyers for the Arts, and Environmental Traveling Companions.

Fort Mason is divided into two distinct parts, Lower Fort Mason, 13-acres of waterfront, including three museums, six theaters and Upper Fort Mason featuring a huge open meadow and youth hostel. In addition to its regular tenants over 500 organizations use the Center's facilities on a monthly basis. All told more than 15,000 events take place at the sprawling Center each year and more than 1.5 million visit annually.
