Potrero Community Gardens, Portrero Hill
There are more than 50 community gardens in San Francisco. Some were started as educational gardens, others for growing food, and still others simply as a way of enhancing a neighborhood. Early community gardens were sometimes 'squat' gardens but today land for the gardens are provided by various public and private entities, including the San Francisco's Recreation and Park Department. The gardens offer urban dwellers a chance to grow plants, fruits, and vegetables with more room than might be possible in their homes or apartments and in a social environment, sharing the upkeep of the common areas. This community garden on Potrero Hill has nearly 50 plots, tended by neighbors using only organic methods.
