The International Settlement, Jackson Square
These two columns in the chic neighborhood of Jackson Square are all that remain of San Francisco's notorious red-light district, International Settlement. Neither international nor a settlement, in the 1940s the area was area filled with bars and brothels trying to recreate the Barbary Coast District, lost to fire years previously. The area was so unsavory that the armed services put it off limits to soldiers and sailors stationed here. When the military dollars move down to the strip clubs and bars on Broadway the International Settlement closed down. Today the area is filled with expensive antique stores and premier attorney's offices.
