Janis Joplin's House, Lyon Street
Within walking distance of the Grateful Dead's old house and the Jefferson Airplane's old house is the home where Janis Joplin lived with Country Joe McDonald when she recorded her classic album Cheap Thrills in 1967. Joplin was later evicted from the house for secreting her pet collie, George in the home. Joplin had arrived in San Francisco in 1963 after a brief enrollment at the University of Texas where she had been cruelly voted "ugliest man on campus." Joplin however found acceptance and fame in the Bay Area where she achieved wide acclaim through her standout performance at the Monterey Pop Festival, an hour and a half South of San Francisco.
