Muir Woods, Marin County
It took us 562 posts to get to one the Bay Area's most popular tourist destinations, Muir Woods National Monument, located just minutes from San Francisco. Given national monument status in 1908, the Woods were named for naturalist and Sierra Club co-founder, John Muir and its tallest-in-the-world redwood trees are up to 800 year old. In 1945 delegates from all over the world meeting in San Francisco to draft and sign the United Nations charter, held a commemorative ceremony in Muir Woods' Cathedral Grove to give tribute to President Franklin D. Roosevelt who had passed away one month earlier. A dedication plaque was placed there in his honor. The Wood's 1.5 mile trail follows the Redwood Creek and is open every day of the year.
