Buddha Bar, Grant Avenue
Grant Avenue is the oldest street in San Francisco and the spot of the first settler's home, about a half block from the Buddha bar pictured above. Originally laid in 1835 the street was first called Calle de Fundacion. When the Americans took over the city in 1846 it was renamed DuPont Street after the captain of the USS Portsmouth, the ship that claimed the San Francisco for America. In 1876 it was again renamed, this time for then President Ulysses S. Grant. While Rodgers and Hammerstein called Grant Avenue, "San Francisco, California, U.S.A." in The Flower Drum Song, many in Chinatown still refer to it as 'Du Pon Gai.'
