Powder Magazine, Fort Point
Built by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1853 at the mouth of the Golden Gate to defend the Bay from invading fleets, Fort Point actually saw its most action when Kim Novak jumped from its walls and was saved by Jimmy Stewart in the 1958 film, Vertigo. This powder magazine is located in the deepest corner of the structure behind several seven-foot-thick walls, and was intended to serve the Fort's 126 cannons. Fort Point is now a National Historic Site and its many rooms and levels can be explored Friday through Sunday, free of charge. It's easy to find, Fort Point sit directly underneath the San Francisco side of the Golden Gate Bridge.
