Paramount Theatre, Downtown Oakland
Both a California Registered Historic Landmark and a National Historic Landmark, the Paramount Theatre in was built in 1931 by renowned San Francisco architect Timothy L. Pflueger. Pflueger, one of San Francisco's most colorful figures of the era, was already known for his work on the Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Company Building, PacBell Building, and the Pacific Coast Stock Exchange, on which he worked with muralist, Diego Rivera. The Paramount was designed in the Art Deco style and contains many murals, mosaics, and bas-relief sculptural panels featuring the work of a number of famous artists and designers. The theater today is one of the San Francisco Bay Area's premiere performing arts facilities, it hosts a year-round schedule of popular music concerts, variety shows, theatre, and films.
