Haight District Pot Arrest, Belvedere Street
On July 11, 1967 the SFPD responded to complains of a noisy party at this address. As soon as the police arrived they discovered marijuana at the house and started arresting party guests. Marijuana present at a Haight party during the '60s? What are the odds? Some of the 18 arrested were found on the roof of the home enjoying the cool San Francisco night. Two of those arrested on the roof were ballet stars Margot Fonteyn and Rudolph Nureyev who had just performed in the city earlier that night. Fonteyn, dressed in a long white mink coat, took her four-hour custody with good humor but Nureyev was less than pleased. "You're all children" he yelled at reporters outside the Hall of Justice after posting a $330 bail for disturbing the peace and being present in a place where marijuana was being kept. The district attorney eventually declined to press charges.
