On the Corner, Jefferson Street
If you look down while crossing the street in San Francisco (not recommended) you'll notice something interesting about each corner. Besides the fact that every corner is wheel-chair accessible, every corner also has both intersecting street names cast into the pavement. While this a handy reference tool for the city's many visitors, the real reason for the pavement markers is a little more sobering. San Franciscans cleaning up after the Great Earthquake of 1906 were constantly disoriented and led astray by the lack of standing landmarks. The sidewalk street names are to aid in rescue should another disaster lay the city to ruin. How fun!
