Telegraph Avenue, Berkeley
Telegraph Avenue is in many ways like the dog towns that run next to any university, full of record stores, bookstores, inexpensive restaurants, and coffee houses. On any sunny day this avenue, next to the UC Berkeley campus, is also filled with a five-block long street fair, its stalls selling tie-dyed clothing, handmade jewelry, crocheted hats, and of course anti-Bush posters and bumper stickers. The liberal atmosphere here draws a bustling, diverse group of visitors from students and tourists, to punks and eccentrics. Telegraph Avenue was the site of many of numerous protests and riots during the '60s and that history of political activism is still alive, mirrored in the many murals on the walls of the avenue's buildings.
