Banana Slug, Marin County
Watch where you step! The Pacific Banana Slug is the second-largest species of slug in the world and can reach ten inches in length. Our seven-inch friend here is excreting a slimy protective layer to keep its skin moist and allow it to breathe. You can often find the Pacific Banana Slug on forest floors in Northern California, especially after a rain. While a proposed bill in 1988 to make the Pacific Banana Slug California's 'official state mollusk' fell short, the gastropod was honored when it became the official mascot of the University of California, Santa Cruz. The school's seal features a cartoon slug reading from a book of Plato.
