All Alone, Baker Beach
The second longest beach in San Francisco is Baker Beach, located on the Pacific side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Popular with the locals, the beach is warm enough for sunbathing and picnicking but its cold waters, sharp rocks, dangerous riptides, and sneaker waves make it a bad spot for swimming or even standing too close to the surf. During the Gold Rush Lobos Creek here at Baker Beach was dammed and a redwood flume carried fresh drinking water a few miles away into San Francisco. Baker Beach is also the location of the 1904 Battery Champlain, whose mobile 97,000 pound cannons were hand-cranked to be hidden behind cypress and pine trees. A demonstration firing of one of these huge 'disappearing' cannons takes place the first weekend of every month.
