Campanile, UC Berkeley
Founded in 1868 the University of California, Berkeley is the oldest and flagship campus of the ten-campus University of California system. Demonized by Right-wing talk radio, the school's serene beauty surprises many first time visitors especially when they find out that the University manages the nation's two principal nuclear weapons labs at Livermore and Los Alamos. Academically the school is second to none having produced 83 Fulbright Scholars, 132 members of the National Academy of Sciences, eight Nobel Prize winners, three Pulitzer Prize winners, and five periodic elements including Plutonium, Berkelium, Lawrencium and Californium. Its contributions to computer sciences are far too many to list. While Berkeley still enjoys a fame for its history of student activism (the Free Speech Movement began here in 1964), its decidely progressive campus was conservative enough to expel student Andrew Martinez, 'The Naked Guy' from the school in 1993.
