Mini Series, Day 1 of 3
Horse racing in the Bay Area dates back to the Gold Rush days when miners would bet their gold dust at a number of San Francisco tracks. Today there remain two horse racing tracks in the San Francisco area, Golden Gate Fields, located on the Bay in Berkeley and Bay Meadows, twenty miles south in San Mateo.

However the most famous Bay Area racetrack, Tanforan no longer exists. Tanforan was built in 1889 and was the home track to the legendary race horse, Seabiscuit. During World War II, Tanforan Race track was used as an internment camp for Japanese-Americans. About 8000 people were kept at Tanforan during the war. In 1971 Tanforan was turned into a shopping mall. Today a statue of Seabiscuit may be seen on the grounds of the Tanforan Mall.
