Golden Laurels, Market Street
When the Nobel Prizes were announced in Stockholm this October, three Bay Area residents, Stanford University professors Andrew Fire and Roger Kornberg and UC Berkeley's George Smoot were named recipients. While three Nobel Prize winners in a 50-mile radius might seem remarkable, the Bay Area schools Stanford, Berkeley and UCSF have accounted for 54 Nobel Prizes since 1939 for work ranging from poetry to particle physics. UC Berkeley, with the highest number of Nobel laureates in the world, also can boast four Fields Medal winners and nine recipients of the prestigious James S. McDonnell Foundation award.
