San Francisco Hearts, Union Square
Chicago has its cows, Albuquerque has its ponies, and San Francisco has its hearts. This public art installation features the work of 130 established and emerging artists who have created large heart sculptures placed around the city to benefit the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation. The image of the heart was chosen for the song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” and as an icon that symbolizes acceptance, tolerance and a city that is open-hearted. In November of 2004, 89 of the sponsored hearts were auctioned online as a fund-raiser. The goal of $1 million was more than doubled.
