Free Music, Chestnut Street
For six years, now music fan and venture capitalist, Warren Hellman has subsidized an enormous and completely free music festival held in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival is not just a small gathering either. This year over 500,000 people attended the free three-day event which featured 67 acts on five stages including such performers as Elvis Costello, T Bone Burnett, Earl Scruggs, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Hot Tuna, Ricky Skaggs, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Billy Bragg, Alejandro Escovedo, Richard Thompson, Bob Weir, and Del McCoury. The billionaire Hellman, an enthusiastic bluegrass and American roots music aficionado, plans to expand the event in the coming years and will generously continue to pick up the entire tab.
