Manhattanization, Financial District
In the 1970s San Francisco's Mayor Joe Alito proposed development of a number of high-rise office buildings to transform the city into the premier home for the financial services on the West Coast. This plan was met with stiff opposition from city residents who feared a “Manhattanization” of San Francisco would ruined views and destroy San Francisco's unique character. In the 1980s, these locals were successful in creating strict size and height restrictions on new developments. For many years, these limits slowed construction of new skyscrapers, but recently the announcement of the impending construction of two residential towers, of 44 and 55 stories, on Rincon Hill has again raise concerns of Manhattanization and with it a rebirth of an opposition movement.
