Rolling Stone Magazine Offices, Third Street
In 1967 Rolling Stone magazine published its first issue in San Francisco. By 1971 it had become the leading rock music and counterculture publication, with a circulation of 600,000. From 1970 to 1977 this brick building housed its offices, having outgrown it's first cramped space a few blocks away on Towsend Street. The San Francisco start-up launched the careers of such writers as Lester Bangs, Hunter S. Thompson, Ben Fong-Torres, P.J. O'Rourke, Cameron Crowe, Kurt Loder, Joe Eszterhas as well as photographer Annie Leibovitz and illustrator Ralph Steadman. Years later the magazine's co-founder and publisher, Jann Wenner moved the magazine's headquarters to New York. Today the building houses the offices of a video game publisher, Ubisoft Entertainment (Myst, Prince of Persia, Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six).
