Transbay Terminal, Mission Street
Unfortunately for some people the first thing they see (and smell) in San Francisco is the rundown Transbay Terminal. Originally built in 1939 to service commuter trains and railroads, the aging terminal now only serves long-distance and transbay buses such as Muni, Golden Gate Transit, and Greyhound. The good news is that a completely new terminal, the Transbay Transit Center, is scheduled to start construction in 2008. This enormous new transportation center will accommodate high-speed rail and, along with the new terminal, several towers including residential, office, and hotel space. This new center is envisioned as becoming the Grand Central Terminal of the West Coast.
