Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory
Down one of the many dark and narrow alleys of Chinatown hides the Golden Gate Fortune Cookie Factory. This decidedly low-tech factory has been producing fortune cookies since 1962. Creating these after-dinner treats is a true skill as the handmade cookies have to have the fortune inserted and the cookie folded within a split second before it cools and hardens. The two women working at this factory, Nancy Tom and Ai Tam, produce 20,000 cookies a day. Drop in visitors can buy a bag of 40 still-warm cookies for $3. For the history of this San Francisco treat see this earlier FogBay post.
