Hill Crest, Pacific Heights
Offering stunning views, Pacific Heights is one of the most sought-after residential districts in San Francisco, with many eight-digit homes built along its slopes. But it wasn't always so desirable, prior to the construction of street car lines most people avoided the steep heights and the district remained undeveloped chaparral and underbrush while much of the city's lower areas were developed. However after the 1906 earthquake and fire many wealthy San Franciscans relocated to mansions they built here on the solid stone of the hill. Since these wealthy families had their own carriages and stables they could more easily traverse the climb. Today the list of mansions on Pacific Heights reads like a register of San Francisco's early wealthy families; Spreckles, Flood, Hearst, Whittier, Atherton, and Phelan.
